The New Publisher...Allyn & Bacon

The Allyn & Bacon 1st Edition

The textbook, "Personality Psychology: A Systems Approach" is now published with Pearson Allyn & Bacon. The three earlier editions of the textbook were published by Pearson Custom Publishing, as custom, classroom test editions in 2002, 2003, and 2005. These were produced in a cooperative venture involving the author, Pearson Custom Publishing, and Pearson Allyn & Bacon.

The three Pearson Custom editions were written by the author, and printed in the summers of 2002, 2003, and 2004, with a very basic layout. Each Pearson Custom edition represented another step forward in terms of the quality and consistency of the writing and conceptualization of the project. Those editions also were guided, in part, by the editorial staff at Allyn & Bacon, by numerous external reviews of the project by instructors at various colleges and universities, by student comments, and by comments from instructors who used the early editions.

Now Allyn & Bacon has published their own first edition of the book. Allyn & Bacon brought to the first edition (and will bring to subsequent editions) of the book a group of specialists who enhance the quality of the overall edition. From Allyn & Bacon come experts in book design, photographic research, copy editing, and, of course, printing, and publishing, who have joined the author in developing this edition.

How the Allyn & Bacon 1st Edition Is Different from the Pearson Custom 3rd Classroom Test Edition

Some of the major changes in the Allyn & Bacon 1st edition (relative to the Pearson Custom 3rd edition) are as follows:

  • A number of of the book's features not seen before (because of restrictions on layout in the Pearson Custom approach) will now appear for the first time. These include:
    • A floating glossary
    • Photographs
    • Marginal quotes
  • The book will be published using a 2-color process (adding blue ink for use along with black & white)
  • Two chapters were substantailly revised, including:
    • 1. What is Personality? and
    • 6. Mental Abilities and Skills
  • Several sections of other chapters were revised for clarity or to update them
  • Also updated were:
    • a number of boxes
    • connecting windows
  • Materials were updated throughout in areas where new research has appeared.
  • The overall book has been more carefully copy edited for consistency

How Long will the 3rd Pearson Custom Edition Remain Available

I believe the 3rd Pearson Custom Edition will be available to instructors as long as orders for the volume continue to arrive. I will check on this with the publisher, but I believe it could be used into Fall, 2006, for example, overlapping with the Allyn & Bacon 1st edition, in case instructors find it inconvenient to change over until the Spring of 2007.

When Was the Allyn & Bacon 1st Edition Available?

The book was published as of April 4th, 2006.
